Jeep Willys in Filandia
From the square to the viewpoint, out to Barbas Bremen, or up to the farm you are staying at.
Filandia is a town of painted balconies that most people walk around, so the rides booked here tend to be short but steep. The Mirador, the wooden lookout tower over the valley, is five minutes by jeep and a long haul on foot with a suitcase. Travellers arriving by bus from Armenia or Pereira usually book a Willys at the bus stop to be dropped straight at their guesthouse, especially when it is a farm somewhere off the main road.
The track to Barbas Bremen also starts here: an oak forest reserve towards Pereira where you can still hear howler monkeys in the morning. It is a dirt track rather than a road, and it is one of the routes where the difference between an ordinary car and a Willys with someone who knows the way is obvious. If you plan to walk there, arrange the return leg when you book the outward one — there is no phone signal up there and you will not be able to call for a lift.
For the coffee farms around here the pattern is always the same: you go up with luggage or with supplies, and the driver helps you unload. Say how many of you there are and what you are carrying in the note when you post the ride. The driver then quotes a price straight away, and nothing changes when he turns up. Fares are paid in cash, in Colombian pesos, on the day — drivers do not take cards.
